Middleport Hill - Salisbury Twp. Cemetery
Meigs County,
Ohio

Born: 18 Aug 1834 Jackson County, West Virginia
Father: Samuel Dewees Mother: Edith Battin
Died: 20 May 1913 Middleport, Salisbury Township, Meigs County, Ohio
Fought in Companny K, 11th West Virginia Infantry
Henry was a private in Company K, 11th West Virginia Infantry Volunteers. He enlisted at Cottageville, Jackson County, August 14, 1862, and mustered in at Ravenswood on August 31, 1862. Henry had the dubious distinction of being the first Dewees injured during the war.
Henry was wounded at the Battle of Fishers Hill, Virginia on September 22, 1864. He was serving in the VIII Corps, 2nd (Kanawha) Division under the command of General George Crook, of Indian War fame (captured Geronimo). Crooks men led the second flank attack in three days against General Jubal Earlys confederates, driving him down into the valley. At the Battle of Opequon Creek (3rd Winchester) Crook flanked Early and drove him out of Winchester. At Fisher's Hill Crooks men scaled the heights that Early's left flank rested on, being protected by the woods, and rushed the rebel works completely routing them. Henry was struck from a cannon blast that wounded him and his cousin, William Jabel Dewees.
Henry returned to the regiment and was present during the Appomattox Campaign and the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. On June 17, 1865, he was mustered out of his regiment in Richmond.

Married: Mary E. Barnhart (11 Jul 1842 - 17 Oct 1923)
