George UHLE

Lakewood Park Cemetery
Cuyahoga County,
Ohio

Major league pitcher George Uhle led his league in games started three times, and also led his league in 1923 and 1926 in wins, innings, complete games, batters faced, and putouts. He was arguably the best pitcher in his league in 1926, even against the likes of Hall of Famers Lefty Grove, Stan Coveleski and Ted Lyons. He pitched scoreless relief in games two and three of the 1920 World Series. He allegedly named the pitch called the slider. Hall of Famer Tris Speaker let Uhle pinch-hit for him once. On May 24, 1929, Uhle threw twenty innings in one game. He is even tied for the record for most hits by a pitcher in one season.
